Scope note: Estructuras de ácido nucleico que se encuentran en el extremo 5' del ARN mensajero celular de eucariotes y virus y de algunos ARN nucleares heterogéneos. Estas estructuras, que tienen carga positiva, protegen en sus sitios terminales a los ARNs antes citados contra el ataque de fosfatasas y otras nucleasas y estimulan el funcionamiento del ARN mensajero en el inicio de la traducción. Los análoogos de caperuza de ARN (ANÁLOGOS DE CAPERUZA DE ARN), que no poseen carga positiva, inhiben la iniciación de la síntesis de proteínas.

Scope note: Nucleic acid structures found on the 5' end of eukaryotic cellular and viral messenger RNA and some heterogeneous nuclear RNAs. These structures, which are positively charged, protect the above specified RNAs at their termini against attack by phosphatases and other nucleases and promote mRNA function at the level of initiation of translation. Analogs of the RNA caps (RNA CAP ANALOGS), which lack the positive charge, inhibit the initiation of protein synthesis.
